Jogulamba Gadwal: A unique sculpture of Nandi carved with Uma and Maheswara on a panel displayed in a museum at Alampur here has received national attention after a presentation was made on it in New Delhi on Thursday.
Noted archaeologist E Sivanagi Reddy made a presentation on ‘ A unique couchant Nandi sculpture carrying Siva and Parvati from Alampur, Telangana’ at a two-day national seminar on ‘Exploring the Essance: Nandi in Indian Mythology & History’. It was organised by Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Delhi. During the presentation, he explained that the sculpture was unique, only one of its kind reported so far from entire Indian context carved with Siva and Parvati on a panel carried by a black basalt Nandi.
Based on the art and iconography, Sivanagi Reddy said it could belong to 12th century CE representing the style of Kanduru Cholas, Subordinates of the Kalyana Chalukyas, who ruled the area in which Alampur was also part. Art historian Prof RH Kulkarni, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad, Bengaluru and the organizers complimented Sivanagi Reddy for bringing the landmark Alampur sculpture to the notice of the many during the national seminar, according to a press release.
