Doctors at KIMS Hospital, Kurnool, on Saturday performed three complex surgeries simultaneously on a critically ill patient, whose condition had been deemed inoperable even by major hospitals in Hyderabad.
Explaining the case details, Dr. S.J. Janakiram, consultant surgical gastroenterologist, gastrointestinal oncologist, and specialist in advanced laparoscopic, HPB and bariatric surgery at KIMS Kurnool, said that 50-year-old farmer, Chandramohan, from Tadipatri, suffered from intense abdominal pain and had visited multiple hospitals.
After initial treatment, he was referred to Hyderabad to seek advanced treatment. Despite receiving temporary treatment in Hyderabad, his problems returned, causing him severe pain and preventing him from eating.
Doctors at the KIMS Kurnool, through diagnostic tests, found an array of issues, including gallbladder stones and a severely weakened intestine that had already undergone an exterior surgery at another centre.
“We conducted a CT scan and colonoscopy to accurately identify the issues. Alongside his gallbladder problem, a segment of his intestine was damaged, and his albumin levels were alarmingly low at 1.9, whereas the healthy range is between 3.5 and 5,’’ Dr. Janakiram said.
The patient was advised to gradually consume as much food as possible to improve his condition. “Once his albumin level rose to 2.8, we decided to proceed with surgery. We informed his family about the high risks involved, and after they consented, we conducted three surgeries simultaneously. It included removing the gallbladder, repositioning the exterior section of the intestine and excising the damaged portion, followed by reattachment of the upper and lower intestinal sections,’’ Dr. Janakiram said.
The condition of Chandramohan has fully stabilised, and he can now eat normally, Dr. Janakiram added.
