Hyderabad: The commercial tax department said it expected to garner Rs 800 crore in professional tax this year, zeroing in on professionals registered under the GST who have failed to pay up. The revenue under the head last year in 2023 was Rs 650 crore.
The department found that around 90,000 taxpayers who had registered between April 2023 and September 2024 had not paid the tax: They have to pay a fixed
amount of Rs 2,500 per year.
Those who have to pay this tax are professionals like lawyers, insurance agents, film producers, actors, technicians, private hospitals, schools, share brokers, horse jockeys etc among others. Kalyana mandapams and money dispensing ATMs of banks are considered as entities for the purpose of this tax.
All of them have to pay Rs 2,500 per year under this count while partners of firms have to pay Rs 1,250 yearly.
