Hyderabad: The state govt on Saturday appointed Burra Venkatesham as chairman of Telangana Public Service Commission (TGPSC). He will take over from M Mahender Reddy, who is set to retire on Dec 3. Venkatesham, a 1995 batch IAS officer, is currently the principal secretary, education department, apart from holding the governor’s secretary post. Venkatesham has more than three years until his retirement, i.e., until April 2028. However, he can continue in the TGPSC chairman post until he turns 62.
The state govt had invited applications for the chairman post on Nov 11 and shortlisted some names. The govt was in a dilemma over appointing an IPS officer on the lines of Mahender Reddy or an IAS officer. Finally, CM A Revanth Reddy preferred to appoint an officer from Telangana, specifically a Backward Classes candidate. Burra Venkatesham is a native of Telangana and belongs to the BC community. TNN
