After enduring a 10-day spell of chilly weatherTelangana experienced a significant rise in temperatures across all districts on Saturday (November 30, 2024).

Why did the temperatures increase?

Meteorologists attributed the rise to the activity of Cyclone Fengal over the Bay of Bengal. “From Saturday, minimum temperatures will see a rise of 2°C to 3°C due to the cyclone. Low-pressure systems increase temperatures by trapping heat. The thick cloud cover acts like a blanket, preventing heat from escaping, while the moist air brought in by cyclones retains more heat than dry air causing an increase in temperatures,” explained A. Dharma Raju, a scientist at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Hyderabad Centre.

Temperatures recorded in various Telangana districts

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data, districts like Adilabad, which had been recording single-digit temperatures until Friday (November 29, 2024), saw a jump to 14.6°C on Saturday. Similar increases were observed in Kamareddy and Vikarabad (15.9°C), Sangareddy (16°C), Medak (16.3°C), Kumaram Bheem Asifabad (16.4°C), Nizamabad and Jagtial (16.6°C), Siddipet (17°C), Nirmal (17.1°C), Rajanna Sircilla (17.3°C), and Rangareddy (17.9°C). Hyderabad, which had been averaging 15°C over the past week, recorded a minimum temperature of 20.7°C on Saturday.

Thunderstorm alert

In addition to the temperature shift, the IMD has forecast a thunderstorm alert to nine districts for Sunday (December 1, 2024). “Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely to occur at isolated places in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal districts,” the IMD bulletin stated.

Weather in Hyderabad

Hyderabad is expected to experience a generally cloudy sky over the next 24 hours. Misty or hazy conditions are likely during the morning, with maximum and minimum temperatures forecasted at 30°C and 21°C, respectively, as per the bulletin.
