The mere fact of an earthquake in the area is quite unusual and the magnitude of 5.3 makes it more intriguing. The quake hit at 7.27 am and the tremors were felt at several places in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, a PTI report added.

Why Is Earthquake Unusual in This Area?

India has been divided into seismic zones: Zone II, Zone III, Zone IV, and Zone V. While Zone V is most vulnerable to seismic activity, Zone II is the least.

Telangana falls under Zone II, which means, it is one of the areas least prone to earthquakes.

” We have got to know that people felt the tremours lightly. They might have felt it very lightly. Hyderabad is not an earthquake-prone area…it is not severe…” Dr Prakash Kumar, Director of CSIR-NGRI said while speaking on the tremors in Telangana’s Hyderabad and Mulugu.

An earthquake with a magnitude of more than 5 is also rare in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, retired scientist of the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) Purnachandra Rao told PTI.

Meanwhile, several residents of Warangal, near Mulugu, said they experienced some sort of jerk for a few seconds around 7.30 am. They mentioned that the ceiling fans began swinging and items started falling off the cupboards.

According to an independent forecaster, this was the biggest earthquake the region witnessed since 1996 when in June, a quake 5.3 magnitude had hit Bhadrachalam.
