Magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolts Telangana’s Mulugu district, tremors felt in Hyderabad


An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 shook Telangana’s Mulugu district on Wednesday morning, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The quake hit at around 7:27 am on Wednesday at a depth of 40 kms and was centred around the Mulugu region, according to the NCS.

“EQ of M: 5.3, On: 04/12/2024 07:27:02 IST, Lat: 18.44 N, Long: 80.24 E, Depth: 40 Km, Location: Mulugu, Telangana,” NCS post on X said.

People in Mulugu and its neighbouring districts, including Hyderabad, felt the tremors as the moderate intensity quake hit the region. There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage to properties. Further details are awaited.

Telangana falls in Seismic Zone II, which is the lowest intensity zone. There are four seismic zones in India, starting with Zone II, followed by Zone III, Zone IV and Zone V. The highest level of and most intense seismic activity is likely in Zone V, making it the most earthquake prone zone of all.
