VISAKHAPATNAM: Visakhapatnam MP Matukumilli Sribharat highlighted the critical need to expedite the operationalisation of the South Coast Railway Zone. Recalling that the zone’s establishment was mandated under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, and its headquarters were declared in Visakhapatnam in February 2019, he expressed concern over the prolonged delay of five years caused by land allocation issues.
Sribharat commended the proactive measures taken by the NDA govt after assuming power earlier this year. During the question hour in Parliament on Wednesday, he acknowledged the swift resolution of land disputes by the state govt, which put the project back on track.
He informed the House that the tendering process for the South Coast Railway Zone was already initiated, and a special officer was appointed.
Urging the central govt to expedite operations, he cited the example of other railway zones that were made operational swiftly after their announcement.
In response, Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured the Lok Sabha that the Centre is committed to accelerating the operationalisation of the South Coast Railway Zone.
He stated that all necessary steps are being taken to expedite the tendering process and operational activities, ensuring the zone becomes functional at the earliest.
Addressing the broader concerns of railway safety and speed, MP Sribharat sought updates on the measures undertaken to modernise railway infrastructure and enhance passenger safety.
Responding to this, Vaishnaw elaborated on the Centre’s initiatives, highlighting significant advancements in track modernisation and safety systems.
He noted that trains that previously operated at speeds of 70-80 kmph are now running at 100-120 kmph due to upgrades in track infrastructure.
The minister also emphasised the impact of the “Kavach” program, a state-of-the-art safety initiative designed to prevent collisions and enhance the reliability of railway operations. By leveraging such technologies, the govt aims to ensure safer and faster travel for passengers across the country.
The operationalisation of the South Coast Railway Zone is anticipated to bolster regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and generate substantial employment opportunities, further strengthening Visakhapatnam’s strategic importance in India’s railway network.
