
Passing Out Parade for the 2024 batch of Prison Trainee Warders being held at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Hyderabad, on Thursday.
The Telangana Prisons Department conducted a Passing Out Parade for the 2024 batch of Prison Trainee Warders at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Hyderabad. The event marked the induction of 101 trainees, including 88 warders, seven of whom are women, along with eight warders from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and five Deputy Jailors.
The ceremony was attended by guests, including Minister for Transport and BC Welfare Ponnam Prabhakar as the Chief Guest, Special Chief Secretary for Home Ravi Gupta as the Guest of Honour and Director General of Prisons, Telangana, Soumya Mishra, who presided over the event. After nine months of training, the new recruits will now serve Telangana Prisons.
In her address, Soumya Mishra praised the trainees for their commitment and highlighted their dual role as security custodians and agents of transformation. She also acknowledged the government’s support in advancing prison reforms. The event showcased the department’s strides in reformative practices, including the premature release of 231 inmates, increased stipends for warders and Deputy Jailors, enhanced wages for prisoners, and staff promotions. Recruitment details were shared, highlighting five new Deputy Superintendents, eight Deputy Jailors, 92 Warders, and 18 Group IV personnel.
Awards were presented to trainees for their exceptional performance during training. Y. Prashanthi was honored as the all-rounder for excelling in multiple categories, including outdoor training, sociology, and social work. P. Sanjeev earned accolades for expertise in correctional practices and the prison manual, while K. Prakash, J. Harish, and others were recognised for their achievements in criminology, human rights, and firing.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ponnam Prabhakar lauded the warders for their dedication and emphasised the importance of fostering inmate rehabilitation through innovative initiatives such as prison industries and self-sufficiency programmes.
As part of the event, a new fuel outlet at Chanchalguda Jail, developed in partnership with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), was inaugurated. This marks the 29th such outlet in the State, further contributing to the department’s reformative and revenue-generating efforts. The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Inspector General of Prisons (Admin) Y. Rajesh and Inspector General of Prisons (Welfare) N. Murali Babu, along with other dignitaries. In her concluding remarks, Ms. Soumya Mishra applauded the principal and staff of SICA for their outstanding training efforts and urged the media to spotlight the department’s initiatives, fostering public support for prison reforms.
