Hyderabad: Following a moderate seismic disturbance in Mulugu, residents experienced tremors lasting approximately 5 seconds on Wednesday between 7:15 am and 7:20 am.
Many people panicked as the vibrations rattled window panes, utensils and beds, though there was no structural damage. “While I was sleeping, I noticed my bed trembling at 7:30 am, and I recognised it as seismic activity, having previously experienced similar occurrences in the United States and my native place in Uttar Pradesh. The tremors lasted around 8 to 10 seconds,” said Chandra Shekhar Sharma, an IIT Professor residing in Sangareddy.
The tremors caused concern among residents of western Hyderabad, where many high-rise buildings are located. These were felt in many parts of the city, including Nanakramguda, Tellapur, Nallagandla, and some parts of Sangareddy.
“When tremors struck for 5 seconds, we were initially confused about what was happening and got clarity only after receiving information about seismic events in the state,” said E Ramana, a resident of Vasudeva Bloomfield Ecstasy in Tellapur.
This led to discussions amongst the residents in many apartments regarding the seismic activity. “Around 7:30, I received an unexpected surge of phone calls from concerned residents reporting unusual occurrences. They described how their utensils were vibrating on tables, whilst others noted that their ceiling fans continued to sway even after being turned off in the aftermath of the seismic activity,” said PB Chowdhary, Chairman of Sumadhura Acropolis, Nanakramguda.
