Vizag Jail Officials Suspended Over Serious Lapses: Mobile Phones, Suicide Incident, and Drug Smuggling | Vijayawada News

Two Vizag central jail officials suspended

Visakhapatnam: The prisons department suspended the former superintendent of Visakhapatnam central jail S Kishore Kumar and additional superintendent M Venkateswarlu for gross negligence and supervisory lapses on their part. A series of untoward incidents occurred at the central prison during their tenure.
In the suspension orders, the govt mentioned a few instances of inmates using mobile phones in the prison and added that call detail records showed that phone calls were made at night from inside the prison. Suicide of a convict prisoner, Uppada Gowri Sankar (25), who hanged himself from the ventilator of the outside toilet in Godavari Barrack, and smuggling of ganja into the central prison by a pharmacist were among the lapses cited in the suspension orders.
The suspension order reveals that the officers also failed to adopt a shift system for the guarding staff, in violation of the standing instructions of DG Prisons, which tarnished the image of the department. The order reveals that the officers violated AP Prisons Rules, 1979, and Rule 3 of AP Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964.
It is noted that Kishore Kumar is presently working on attachment at the Prisoner Agricultural Colony in Anandapuram, and Venkateswarlu is presently working on attachment at Central Prison in Nellore.
