A woman died and her son sustained injuries after a crowd surged at a theatre during the premiere of “Pushpa 2: The Rule” in Hyderabad, police said Thursday, reports PTI.
The incident took place on Wednesday night when large numbers of fans gathered at the cinema hall hoping to catch a glimpse of actor Allu Arjun. The theatre had no prior arrangements for the crowd or the arrival of the actor and his team, according to police.
As the crowd rushed forward, the woman and her son, who were attempting to enter the theatre, became trapped and suffocated.
Preliminary investigations suggest they lost consciousness after being pushed by the crowd. The theatre was reportedly small and unable to accommodate the massive influx of people.
Police officers performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the woman and her son before rushing them to the hospital. While the woman was later pronounced dead, her son is receiving treatment.
To control the chaos, police used mild force to disperse the crowd.
A case has been filed regarding the incident.
