Hyderabad: The Maheshwaram Special Operations Team (SOT) along with the local police caught a man on charges of drug peddling in Uppal on Friday. Officials seized 1kg opium, a scooter and a mobile phone, altogether worth Rs 5.1 lakh from him.

The arrested person is Badar Ram (32), a marble worker from Ganesh Nagar Colony in Uppal and native of Rajasthan. The absconding suspect is Laxman Malik, a drug dealer from Rajasthan.

According to the police, Ram migrated to Hyderabad a decade ago in search of work and took up odd jobs earlier and as his income seemed meager, he decided to take up drug peddling.

For this, he went to his home town and procured 1 kg of opium drug from Laxman Malik for Rs 50,000. He planned to sell it to consumers in Hyderabad at a higher rate and make easy money.

“He smuggled the drug into Hyderabad in the train and planned to sell it for Rs 400 per 10 grams,” said a police official.

Following a tip-off, the police nabbed him at Uppal when he was trying to sell the drug to consumers and seized the contraband from his possession.
