A 16-year-old student attempted to end his life at his home in Raidurgam allegedly after having been humiliated in front of his class by his teacher. The teenager is in a critical state at a private hospital in Raidurgam and a case has been registered against the teacher.
The victim is a 16-year-old student of Nagarjuna High School in Raidurgam. According to Raidurgam Inspector Ch Venkanna, the boy tried to end his life on December 4 when his mother stepped out to get groceries. “His teacher scolded him [that day] for coming late to the class and being irregular to school; he was also punished in front his class,” explained the officer. The boy apparenty felt humiliated by the experience.
On reaching home, he shared the incident with his mother. “Later, when his mother stepped out to get vegetables in the evening, he took the drastic step,” the official said. When the woman returned home about 15 minutes later, she noticed him struggling to breathe and he was rushed to a nearby private hospital, added the inspector.
Following a complaint received on December 6, the Raidurgam police registered a case against the teacher and launched an investigation.
A spate of incidents
This comes after a spate of similar events reported in and around Hyderabad over the past few weeks. On December 6, an 18-year-old student of Dundigal’s Marri Laxman Reddy Institute of Technology and Management was found dead in her hostel room, and another 16-year-old Intermediate student was found dead inside the washroom of Narayana College in Annojiguda on December 2.
On November 14, a 17-year-old student at the Nizampet branch of Sri Chaitanya College was found dead in his hostel room.
