APSRTC chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao, vice-chairman Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao and others presenting awards to the winners of the national athletics meet, in Visakhapatnam on Sunday
The three-day national athletics meet of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) concluded in Visakhapatnam on Sunday (December 8).
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation emerged the runner-up and APSRTC stood the second runner-up while Karnataka RTC emerged as the overall winner at the meet, organised by APSRTC in collaboration with the Association of State Road Transport Undertakings.
Karnataka won 14 medals, followed by KKRTC (three medals), NWKRTC (eight medals), TSRTC (two medals), MSRTC (10 medals), Gujarat RTC (two medals), DTC (three medals), BMTC (six medals), Uttarakhand RTC (two medals), BEST RTC (seven medals) and MTC Chennai (one medal).
“Although APSRTC won 15 medals, one more than Karnataka RTC, but the latter won more gold medals. Therefore, they got more points for evaluation of the overall winner in an athletic meet,” a senior RTC official explained to The Hindu.
The trophies were presented to the winners at the valedictory event held at the A.P. Police Stadium located at Kailasagiri on Sunday. APSRTC chairman Konakalla Narayana Rao was present as the chief guest.
On the occasion, Mr. Narayana Rao said that Transport, Youth and Sports Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy was supposed to attend the event as the chief guest, but could not make it, however, he said it was an honour for him to participate as the chief guest in the inaugural and validctory functions.
He stressed that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is keen on safeguarding the welfare of APSRTC staff and workers and that the RTC will soon gain more miles under Mr. Naidu’s tenure.
APSRTC vice-chairman and Managing Director Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that such competitions will foster sportsmanship among the employees. He appreciated an RTC driver, Srinivas from Kakinada depot, who has reached the national level in weightlifting. He added that several women employees, especially bus conductors, are excelling in athletics.
