Visakhapatnam: Noted music director and Swachha Visakha ambassador, RP Patnaik, urged the people of Visakhapatnam to join the city’s mission to become a plastic-free zone. Addressing the public at an awareness and pledge-taking programme organised by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) at RK Beach area, Patnaik spoke about the urgent need to reduce plastic consumption.
“Visakhapatnam is a city blessed with natural beauty. It’s our responsibility to preserve this environment for future generations. Single-use plastics are a major threat to our health and ecosystem. Let’s work together to eliminate them,” said Patnaik.
GVMC additional commissioners D.V. Ramana Murthy and R. Somannarayana, along with chief medical officer Dr. Naresh Kumar, participated in the event.
GVMC officials said that single-use plastics will be prohibited in the city from 1 January 2025. They urged consumers, traders, and manufacturers to cooperate by adopting eco-friendly alternatives. The corporation will intensify awareness programmes to educate the public about this initiative, they added.Highlighting the harmful effects of plastic pollution, Patnaik encouraged citizens to adopt eco-friendly alternatives.
“With determination, the GVMC will implement a ban on single-use plastics from January 2025. I am proud to support this initiative and will continue to work alongside GVMC to spread awareness,” added Patnaik.
Patnaik called on everyone to pledge to stop using single-use plastics and urged businesses and residents to cooperate with GVMC’s efforts.
