Some parts of Mahabubnagar witnessed tremors.
This is the second earthquake in less than a week and both were reported in seismic zone 3. The first earthquake of magnitude 5.3 was reported on December 4 morning in Mulugu.
Former NGRI scientist Dr Sri Nagesh told NewsMeter, “It is a cycle that has begun and it will slowly die down. There is nothing to worry about. Pertinent to note that the first earthquake (December 4) was of 5.3 magnitude on the Richter scale and no aftershocks were witnessed. The public need not panic.”
In 1969 an earthquake of similar magnitude occurred in Telangana and it was called the Bhadrachalam earthquake. In Telangana region, there are two Seismic zones, 2 and 3, respectively. Today’s earthquake which happened falls in the seismic zone 3.
According to Dr Sri Nagesh, earthquake is a reminder for state municipalities to access the safety of built environment for future design for buildings. As per the sesimic zoning map of India, the municipality regulations of buildings should be as per the IS18:93:2016 seismic senses. Municipalities give approvals for buildings, hence they should follow the regularities as per the seismic map.
