In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Visakhapatnam city police on Sunday (December 8) started the ‘Road Traffic Victims Assistance Centre’ at the Police Commissionerate.
Home Minister V. Anitha along with Director General of Police (DGP) Dwaraka Tirumala Rao inaugurated the centre in the presence of Police Commissioner Shankabratha Bagchi.
After the inaugural, Ms. Anitha said that after road accidents, families of the victims struggle to claim insurance. In a cumbersome process to claim the compensations, the kin have been running across offices, but in vain, as most of them are not receiving the benefits.
On an average in Visakhapatnam city, only 30 to 40 victims families have received compensation out of around 500 families, she observed.
The centre, set up to assist the victim families, aims to ensure that the receive compensation, she said, adding that people could contact the toll free number 7995095793, to know the status of their application. She also appreciated the Visakhapatnam police for coming up with the initiative.
Mr. Bagchi said that since the year 2021, around 5,011 road accident cases were reported in the city, in which 1,338 people died and 5,013 people have sustained injuries. In between April 1, 2022 to October 31, 2024, around 197 hit-and-run cases were reported.
