Telangana Government has decided to celebrate December 9 as “Telangana Thalli Avatarana Dinotsavam” (day of birth of mother Telangana) every year.

The day has been chosen as it was on December 9, 2009, former Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram announced late evening that the process for carving out separate Telangana will be initiated. It also coincides with the birthday of senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy made the announcement on the first day of the winter session of the legislature on Monday. The announcement comes ahead of the unveiling of the newly designed Telangana Thalli (mother Telangana) statue in the evening. Telangana Thali had been the inspiration behind the struggle for the separate statehood uniting people from all sections and bringing together action plans conceived by each in pursuit of separate Telangana.

Telangana Thalli statue was not recognised officially

Though there were several designs of Telangana Thalli statue in the public domainnone was officially recognised thus far. “One party’s thoughts cannot reflect the aspirations of four crore people of the State. Such thinking exposes the mindset of the feudal lords of the medieval times,” he said.

Mr. Revanth Reddy explained that discussions were held with stakeholders and experts on the design of the statue where majority favoured that Telangana Thalli should represent mother rather than a goddess. “Discussions focussed on two aspects; whether Telangana Thalli should be a like a Goddess wearing crown or whether she should represent a mother? Majority preferred mother to Goddess,” he said.

The people’s government had therefore decided to design the statue of Telangana Thalli and instal it in front of the State Secretariat. Mr. Revanth Reddy said the statue had been designed in such a manner that it reflected the emotions and aspirations of the people as well as the rich culture and history of the State. While the open (right) hand gave assurance of prosperity, closed fists adorn the dais on which Telangana Thalli stood reflecting the determination to fight for rights and sacrifices made by people, youth in particular, for separate Statehood.

Taking an indirect dig at the opposition BRS, the Chief Minister said no steps were taken to fulfil the aspirations that led to intensification of struggle for separate statehood. There was no official song neither was there an official statue. The Government had therefore made ‘TG’ as official abbreviation for the State and adopted Jaya Jayahe Telangana as the State’s song.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) members should have been present in the House and expressed their views about the Government’s decision of installing Telangana Thalli statue. There could be divergent views and they could oppose the Government’s decision, but they should be present in the House on such important occasions.

He recalled how the Congress Government in the erstwhile united State introduced the AP Reorganisation Act in Assembly amid surcharged atmosphere allowing members to express their views on bifurcation of the State. “Is it proper for the BRS to abstain from the proceedings?” he asked.

Ministers D. Sridhar Babu, N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, Jupally Krishna Rao, Ponnam Prabhkar, C. Damodar Rajanarsimha, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, and others spoke.
