Hyderabad: The Armoor police of Nizamabad registered a case against a woman, Sangam Bhagya Laxmi, who allegedly sold her three sons, including twins to three different couples, about a year ago.
The boys have now been rescued.
According to J Venkateshwar Reddy, assistant commissioner of police (Armoor division), the transactions came to light three days ago. Subsequently police initiated suo-motu action and started a probe, he added.
Police said the woman had three children from her first marriage. But after her husband abandoned her, she did petty jobs to take care of them. But soon, Laxmi ran into financial problems.
“Around the same time, three childless couples approached her seeking to adopt her children,” said a police official, adding, “They proceeded with the adoption without following any legal adoption procedure and collectively paid Rs 4.2 lakh to Laxmi for it.”
Inquiries into the case have revealed that Laxmi sold one son to Bathula Gangadhar for Rs 1 lakh, another to S Vinaja for Rs 2 lakh, and the third son to D Narsaiah for Rs 1.2 lakh.
“A detailed investigation into the case is underway,” said an official from Armoor police station.
Meanwhile, the three children were produced before the Child Welfare Committee after being rescued and handed over to the Women and Child Welfare department for further care.
Police are yet to make any arrests in the case.
