Telangana witnessed a significant rise in dengue cases this year, with 9,761 cases reported by October 31, surpassing the 2023 total of 8,016 cases. The State recorded over 3,000 cases in September and October alone, according to data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC).

As of August 31, the State had reported 6,405 dengue cases, indicating an increase of 3,356 cases in just two months. Dengue, a vector-borne disease transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, remains endemic in India, with cases peaking between July and mid-November during the monsoon and post-monsoon season. This period provides ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes due to stagnant water accumulation.

Malaria, chikungunya trends

According to data from NCVBDC, the State also reported 235 malaria cases by October 31, up from 200 on August 31. However, this marks a decline compared to the 420 cases recorded in 2023.

Chikungunya cases saw a sharp rise, increasing from 178 cases as of August 31, to 435 cases by the end of October. The latest update from the Telangana Health department, released on November 21, stated that chikungunya cases reached 447 after a total of 13,320 samples were tested.

The Director of Public Health and Family Welfare in the November update had said, “The Health department during the monsoon season had undertaken intensified surveillance and reporting, district coordination committee meetings, and effective mosquito control measures. The department ensured the availability of adequate testing kits and essential medicines across health facilities to manage the situation effectively.”
