Vijayawada: A woman attempted suicide by consuming pesticide and alleged harassment from a moneylender in Tenali of Guntur district. The incident came to light when the victim recorded a selfie video explaining her ordeal, which went viral on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as Gajulavarthi Koteswaramma, hailing from Kolakaluru village in Tenali. In the video, she alleged that she borrowed Rs 3 lakh from a woman named Penapati Vijaya of the same village. Despite repaying Rs 7 lakh for the Rs 3 lakh she took, she was still being harassed to pay Rs 4 lakh. She also claimed that Vijaya came to her house on Tuesday morning and took away some amount she had.
She also alleged that she lodged a complaint at the home minister’s office, but no action has been taken so far. She claimed she had no one to help her and consumed the pesticides before ending her selfie video.
Later, her family members, who noticed that the victim attempted suicide, rushed her to Tenali govt hospital. She is currently undergoing treatment.
According to Tenali rural SI Pratap Kumar, Koteshwaramma and Vijaya are relatives and stay in nearby houses. Police recorded the victim’s statement and are verifying the facts before registering a case, the SI added.
