A few district unions of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation, Aavin, will introduce a new variant of green magic milk that has 4.5% fat content. This will be a fortified variant with vitamins A and D and more protein, making it a healthier option for children.
Milk fortification has been done by a few cooperatives following studies revealing that there were deficiencies of micro-nutrients including zinc, iron, folic acid, and vitamins A and D among both urban and rural populations.
Aavin Managing Director S. Vineeth said these unions had evinced interest in adding a variant to their list of products. “Unions at Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, and Salem have opted for this. We are doing this as a trial starting off with small quantities. We are also looking at covering uncovered areas,” he said.
The green magic plus will have 9% solids non-fat (SNF), 4.5% fat, 170 milligrams of calcium per 100 ml of milk, 27 mcg of added vitamin A per 100 ml of milk, and 0.5 mcg of vitamin D per 100 ml. However, there will be no change in the regular green magic being supplied in Chennai. The city consumes around 5 lakh litres of green magic per day. Aavin supplies around 31.5 lakh litres of milk per day.
A retired official of Aavin said that this was a long-pending announcement and was glad to see that it was being implemented at least on a trial basis. “This should be expanded to all cities and rural areas where Aavin products are sold,” he said.
