Mahindra rules this segment with over 77% market share being retained by its Scorpio/N and XUV700
Mahindra’s Scorpio/N and XUV700 are leaders of the mid-size SUV segment. Both these models boast of a fascinating combination of design and performance while they also exude exceptional technology and are considered high value for money SUVs. Both these models together stood at the top two positions of the mid-size SUV segment, together commanding a 77% market share.
Mid-Size SUV Sales Nov 2024
In an earlier post we had listed out compact SUV sales (4.2-4.4m) which had accounted for 47,890 unit sales. The sub-4 meter segment too witnessed sales to the extent of 1,00,705 units. Conversely, the mid-size SUV category sees relatively much lower sales which stood at 28,332 units in the past month.
Mid-size SUV sales declined marginally on a YoY basis by 0.49% to 28,332 units in Nov 2024. This was a dip by 139 units from 28,471 units sold in Nov 2023. Its MoM performance fell even more sharply by 16.75% from 34,033 units sold in Oct 2024. This related to a 5,701 unit volume de-growth with all but the VW Tiguan showing lower sales.
Topping the sales list once again was the Mahindra Scorpio/N followed by the XUV700. Both these models have seen efficient YoY improvement in sales even as MoM sales declined sharply. Scorpio/N sales were at 12,704 units last month, a 4.26% YoY growth from 12,185 units sold in Nov 2023. MoM sales dipped by 18.96% as festive demand boosted sales to 15,677 units in Oct 2024.
XUV700 had 9,100 unit sales in the past month, a 26.02% YoY growth over 7,221 units sold in Nov 2023 to command a 32.12% market share. Its MoM performance dipped by 12.79% as against 10,435 units sold in Oct 2024. Sales are set to improve with the new XUV700 EV in the making. It will be called the XEV 7e and will be the company’s third electric offering after the BE 6e (now renamed BE6) and XEV 9e.
Tata Safari, Harrier Sales Decline in Nov 2024
At No. 3 on the mid-size SUV sales list for Nov 2024 was the Hyundai Alcazar. Sales were up 11.55% YoY to 2,134 units, up by 221 units from 1,913 unit sales of Nov 2023. MoM sales declined by 3.18% over 2,204 units sold in Oct 2024. Tata Harrier and Safari are both facing increased competition in the mid-size SUV segment. A shift in consumer preferences have steered attention away from these two once highly successful models.
Tata Safari sales dipped to 1,563 units in Nov 2024, down by 29.18% from 2,207 units sold in Nov 2023. Its MoM sales also suffered from a 25.07% de-growth over 2,086 unit sales of Oct 2024. Harrier sales also fell both YoY and MoM by 40.93% and 29.43% to 1,374 units. There had been 2,326 units and 1,947 units sold in Nov 2023 and Oct 2024 respectively.
The MG Hector/Plus is also facing a downward sales trend in recent months. Sales fell to 1,106 units in Nov 2024, a 48.08% de-growth from 2,130 units sold in Nov 2023. MoM sales suffered a 9.64% decline from 1,224 units sold in Oct 2024. Buyer’s attention is now being steered to the new MG Windsor which was the best-selling model in the company portfolio. Sales list of mid-size SUVs also included the Jeep Compass (188 units), Hyundai Tucson (84 units), VW Tiguan (79 units) and Citroen C5 Aircross of which 0 units were sold in the past month.
