Hyderabad: A bid to encroach upon the full tank level (FTL) of Himayatsagar was foiled and three individuals were booked in separate cases for dumping mud and stones into the reservoir’s buffer zone. The reservoir, one of the sources of drinking water of Hyderabad, has been the target of encroachers despite its critical role in sustaining the city. The RGI Airport police have registered three separate criminal cases based on complaints filed by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB).
On Dec 12, 2024, a complaint was filed by P Govind Goud, deputy general manager (Engineering), sub-division-I, HMWS&SB, stating that mud and stones were being dumped into the FTL of Himayatsagar, adjacent to land owned by Shekar Yadav, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, Hyderabad. Heavy vehicles were used for the illegal activity, and the encroachment polluted the reservoir, jeopardising the water supply for Hyderabad.
Police registered a case for violations under Sections 279, 326(a), 324(3), and 329(1) of the BNS Act.
A second complaint was filed by the same officer on Dec 12, alleging that mud and stones were being dumped into the Himayatsagar abutting the land of Srisailam, a resident of Kiliskhan Dargah, Rajendranagar mandal.
The illegal dumping was carried out using heavy vehicles and posed a serious threat to the reservoir’s water quality. The RGIA Police registered a case too.
At 2:45 pm on the same day, a third complaint was lodged by P Govind Goud against Srikanth, a resident of Hyderabad. The complaint stated that mud and stones were being dumped into the FTL of Himayatsagar, near land owned by Srisailam. This activity also caused pollution and encroached upon govt land for wrongful gains.
The HMWSSB and local police were investigating these cases.
