Woman Files Cruelty Complaint After Suicide Attempt in Mulugu

Hyderabad: A woman from the city, who was found in an unconscious state after an apparent suicide bid in Mulugu while she was looking for her absconding husband on Saturday, registered a complaint against her in-laws for cruelty at the Alwal police station.

According to police sources, the man, who is absconding, abandoned her after marriage after finding her to be ‘too advanced’ to fit into his family. The couple belongs to different religions.

The woman told the media on Sunday that she was being constantly harassed by her in-laws and that they allegedly told her that they would get their son married to a woman who is ‘richer’.

According to Mulugu investigating officer Vijay, the woman was residing in Bengaluru in a paying guest accommodation some distance from her house. She got in touch with the accused, employed at a tech major, in 2023 through a social media platform and entered into a relationship. They married in January this year in Bengaluru,

“After the couple shifted to the man’s residence in Alwal, his family was constantly harassing her. They initially did not accept her as she belonged to a different religion,” Vijay said. “Months later, they accepted her and decided to get the two married again. Now, the man is refusing to marry her. On December 5, he went to the Alwal police alleging harassment by his wife,” Vijay said.

“The Alwal police counselled them and briefed them on the legalities of their marriage. On Saturday morning, the man told his family and his wife that he would die by suicide and left home.”

Searching for him, his wife reportedly reached Shamirpet, assuming her husband might have gone to the lake there. When she did not find him, she reportedly attempted to die by suicide.

Locals spotted her and and tried to stop her but she reportedly shoeed them away. The called the Mulugu police who reached the spot and shifted her to a government hospital for treatment.

After she was declared stable, a magistrate reached the hospital to record her statement. “As the Turkapally area falls under our jurisdiction, we asked the woman about the matter, and asked if she wanted to register a case. She refused and said she would be getting counselling and would get back to her family as she wants to live with her husband,” the SI said.

“I even called her husband, who is currently at large as per my knowledge. He did pick the call at first. We informed him about his wife, but he did not respond well,” the SI said.

The woman reached the Alwal police station, where she was counselled on Sunday. Following this, the woman agreed to lodge a complaint. The Alwal police registered a case under Section 85 of the BNS (cruelty towards women by husband, in-laws and relatives), Alwal police said.
