Hyderabad: The assembly was on Monday rocked by protests by BRS leaders demanding the Congress govt debate the Lagacherla incident in the House.
Later, they staged a walkout from the assembly during the question hour on pending bills to sarpanches and also from the business advisory committee (BAC) meeting, demanding the session should be held for at least 15 days.
The ruling Congress also refuted the BRS leaders’ charges. The assembly was adjourned without taking up a short discussion on the tourism policy in the afternoon due to protests by the principal opposition, BRS.
When the BRS leaders protested with placards demanding the govt take up a debate on the Lagacherla issue, speaker G Prasada Kumar refused to take up the issue. The BRS legislators continued their protests
The assembly session began after a week on Monday. Earlier in the day, during the question hour, BRS MLA T Harish Rao raised the issue of 690 crore pending bills to gram panchayat sarpanches. He alleged that big contractors’ pending bills were being cleared, but not those of sarpanches. The Congress govt even diverted the State Finance Commission and 15th Finance Commission funds. He said sarpanches and MPTCs were not getting salaries for past nine months.
BJP MLA K Venkata Ramana Reddy said both Congress and BRS should be blamed for pending bills. BRS MLAs Palla Rajeshwar Reddy and Kova Laxmi said the situation was such that even sarpanches committed suicides as many of them mortgaged their jewellery and properties to complete works.
Panchayat raj minister D Anasuya (Seethakka) said the bills were pending during the BRS regime as the KCR govt did not clear them.
She said just two months after Congress came to power in Dec 2023, the term of gram panchayats ended on Feb 1. BRS leaders Harish Rao and Vemula Prashanth Reddy and AIMIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi walked out of the BAC meeting, which met to decide the number of days the assembly session would continue.
The former finance minister questioned how the govt introduced the bills on Monday morning without discussing them in the assembly and demanded the session be held for 15 days.
