Maruti Baleno took the No. 1 spot both as India’s best-selling car and also the best-selling hatchback in Nov 2024 with 16,293 unit sales
Hatchbacks in India continued to play a major role across the automotive segment with sales of 81,551 units in Nov 2024. It reigned over sedan of which a total of 24,757 units were sold last month, even as both segments have suffered a YoY and MoM decline in demand. Demand is on the rise for SUVs across both compact and sub-4 meter spectrums turning buyer’s attention away for smaller models.
Hatchback Sales Nov 2024
Hatchback sales in Nov 2024 stood at 81,551 units. This was a YoY decline of 4.18% from 85,112 units sold in Nov 2023. MoM sales also declined by 8.75% from 89,369 units sold in Oct 2024a month which saw festivities and extensive discounts and benefits offered by several automakers in India. Maruti Suzuki continued in its lead position in the hatchback segment. The company had 4 of its models in the top 4 positions and 6 hatchbacks in the top 10.
Maruti Baleno topped the charts with 16,293 unit sales in Nov 2024. It was the best-selling hatchback and also the best-selling car in the past month. This was a 25.71% YoY growth from 12,961 units sold in Nov 2023 relating to a 3,332 unit volume increase. Baleno currently commands a 19.98% market share and achieved a 1.3% MoM growth from 16,082 units sold in Oct 2024.
Also from the Maruti stables was Swift which has suffered a 3.75% YoY and 15.98% MoM decline in sales to 14,737 units. There had been 15,311 units and 17,539 units sold in Nov 2023 and Oct 2024 respectively. Swift holds an 18.07% market share. The third model on this best-selling hatchback list was WagonR with 13,982 unit sales, a 15.60% YoY decline from 16,567 units sold in Nov 2023. WagonR has long been regaled for its versatility catering to the demands of budget conscious buyers in the country thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency. Its sales on a MoM basis improved marginally by 0.43% to currently command a 17.15% market share. Maruti Alto suffered a 7.54% YoY and 12.65% MoM decline. Its sales dipped to 7,467 units in the past month.
Hyundai i10 NIOS saw increased demand last month with sales increasing by 20.37% YoY to 5,667 units, up from 4,708 units sold in Nov 2023. Its MoM sales however, declined by 9.11% over 6,235 units sold in Oct 2024. It was followed by Tata Tiago/EV with 5,319 unit sales last month relating to a 3.43% YoY decline but a 13.61% MoM growth. Tiago along with Tigor are also set to receive a facelift later this year.
The sales list of best-selling hatchbacks in Nov 2024 also included Hyundai i20 (3,925 units), Toyota Glanza (3,806 units) and Maruti Celerio (2,379 units). While i20 and Glanza suffered YoY and MoM decline in sales, Celerio received added attention with a 7.40% improvement from 2,215 units sold in Nov 2023. Maruti S-Presso too was in high demand with 2,283 unit sales in the past month. It was the only model apart from Baleno to witness YoY and MoM growth.
Ignis, Altroz, Comet, Kwid – Sales Nov 2024
Lower down the list of best-selling hatchbacks in Nov 2024 was Maruti Ignis, sales of which grew by 32.71% YoY to 2,203 units. There had been 1,660 units sold in Nov 2023 while in Oct 2024 sales had been significantly higher at 2,663 units. Tata Altroz was an underperformer in the hatchback segment with 2,083 unit sales last month, a 57.96% YoY and 21.16% MoM decline. MG Comet EV (600 units), Renault Kwid (546 units) and Citroen C3 (200 units) also suffered severe decline in demand while demand for Citroen eC3 EV saw a triple digit growth by 238.89% YoY to 61 units in Nov 2024 from just 18 units sold in the same month last year. It however, fell by 31.46% on a MoM basis from 89 unit sales of Oct 2024.
