Vijayawada: The high court on Monday extended the interim relief from arrest granted to YSRCP social media in-charge Sajjala Bhargava Reddy in the quash petitions filed challenging the alleged misuse of section 111 of BNS.
The court said the interim relief is being extended in view of the earlier orders of the Supreme Court.
Senior counsels Mahesh Jethmalani and Siddharth Dave appeared on behalf of Bhargav Reddy, contending that multiple cases were registered against the petitioner over alleged abuse on social media. They also contended that invoking section 111 of BNS in such cases is illegal. The state govt counsel sought time to file counters, stating that some of the matters came up for hearing for the first time.
Bhargav Reddy earlier filed quash petitions in the high court seeking interim relief from arrest. After the HC declined to grant him interim protection from arrest, he moved the Supreme Court challenging the alleged misuse of section 111 of BNS. The apex court declined to entertain the petition and asked him to go back to the high court, while granting him protection from arrest for two weeks.
Considering all the submissions, Justice BVLN Chakravarthy said counters are yet to be filed by the prosecution. Observing that the apex court has granted interim relief to Bhargav Reddy, and considering other facts and circumstances, Justice Chakravarthy stayed his arrest for two weeks and posted the matter for further hearing to Dec 24.
