Hyderabad: With winter reaching its zenith, Telangana is witnessing increasingly cold nights with temperatures dipping into single digits, making it imperative for residents to bundle up.
In fact, the past week has seen persistent morning fog and mist, forcing people to don woollen caps, jackets and scarves for their daily commute.
On Saturday night, the temperature at Ibrahimpatnam in Rangareddy district dipped to 8.9 degrees Celsius, the coldest in the region this season. Within the city limits, West Marredpally recorded the lowest temperature at 13.2 degrees.
Meanwhile, Adilabad faced severe cold wave conditions on Saturday night. In many districts, including Adilabad, Nirmal, Asifabad and Sangareddy, the minimum temperature dipped to 6 degrees Celsius. As many as 13 districts recorded single digit temperatures, with Bheempoor in Adilabad recording the lowest temperature of 6.3 degrees.
The state has seen a steady decline in minimum temperatures over the past four days. As per the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast, Adilabad and Nirmal will continue to experience cold wave conditions on Sunday and Monday.
The IMD has confirmed that winter officially began in Telangana on Dec 9, triggered by a western disturbance that affected the western Himalayan region and surrounding areas of northern India, Pakistan and the Tibetan plateau. This weather phenomenon caused an abrupt drop in temperatures in Hyderabad and various districts, with cold conditions expected to persist for the next 48 hours.
“Under these weather conditions, the northern regions of Telangana will experience cold wave conditions with wind movement extending towards Vikarabad district. The state may receive light rainfall on Dec 18 and 19, followed by rising temperatures till Dec 24. Thereafter, during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, temperatures will drop sharply and remain low till the second week of Jan,” said a senior IMD official.
