NTR dist aims top spot under Surya Ghar Muft Bijli scheme | Vijayawada News

Vijayawada: The NTR district administration is striving to secure top position in Andhra Pradesh under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) by providing solar on-grid connections to two lakh households within the next two year.
Under this scheme, the eligible households can install 3 KW solar panels worth 2 lakh with a 78,000 subsidy. Beneficiaries contribute just 20,000, while the remaining amount can be financed through bank loans at a low interest rate of 7%.
This initiative is expected to save families approximately 32,000 annually on electricity bills. Excess power generated can also be transferred to the grid, earning 2.09 per unit.
NTR district collector Dr. G Lakshmi Shah emphasized the importance of the scheme, describing it as a cost-effective solution that promotes renewable energy while easing the burden of rising power bills.
“Renewable energy is the future, and a small investment now will ensure long-term benefits. The scheme is affordable, even for the middle class,” he noted.
To ensure success, Dr Lakshmi Shah urged residents to adopt solar energy and contribute to reducing dependency on fossil fuels, describing it as a collective social responsibility.
He highlighted the pivotal role of banks in facilitating loans for beneficiaries, urging them to simplify processes and process applications swiftly.
Authorities have launched awareness campaigns, involving self-help groups and village and ward secretariat staff, to encourage participation. Weekly reviews will be conducted to monitor progress, with banks playing a crucial role in achieving the district’s ambitious goals.
Dr. Lakshmi Shah reiterated that the scheme aligns with the broader vision of sustainable development and economic progress, meeting the targets set by the state govt under the Swarna Andhra 2047 Vision.
