Maruti WagonR Celebrates 25 Years in India – Journey Explained

The Maruti Suzuki WagonR, the entry-level hatchback from the Indo-Japanese automaker, has completed 25 successful years in the country. It has been the highest-selling car in India for the last three consecutive financial years – FY22, FY23, and FY24. The carmaker has revealed that the hatchback has over 32 lakh customers and is quite popular among first-time car buyers. Currently, the Maruti WagonR is available with two petrol engine options – 1.0L and 1.2L – delivering 66 bhp with 89 Nm and 89 bhp with 113 Nm, respectively. Both manual and AGS (or AMT) gearboxes are offered.

Introduction & Generation Updates

The Maruti WagonR was first introduced in India in 1999. Its tall-boy design, spacious interior, and practicality make it stand out from other cars in its category. The hatchback has also been favored for its fuel efficiency and affordability. Over its 25 years in the market, the model has undergone several generational updates and facelifts, each improving on the previous version in terms of design, features, and performance.

The hatchback entered its second generation in 2008 and received a CNG variant along with a more modern design and updated engine. Its third-generation version arrived in 2019, built on a new platform and featuring updates such as reverse parking sensors, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, keyless entry, and more. Current Model & Its Offerings

The latest update was made in 2022. Currently, the Maruti WagonR model lineup is available in 12 variants (including the Waltz Edition and dual-tone versions), priced between Rs 5.54 lakh and Rs 7.33 lakh (ex-showroom). The standard feature kit includes powered front windows, manual AC, distance-to-empty display, idle start/stop, rear parking sensors, speed alerts, seatbelt reminder, ABS with EBD, and dual airbags.

Features such as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, four speakers, front passenger-side seat under tray, tachometer, electrically folding wing mirrors, turn indicators on wing mirrors, front fog lamps, rear wiper, washer and defogger, and 14-inch alloy wheels are reserved for the top-end trim.
