The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will take over the security of Vijayawada International Airport, at Gannavaram in Krishna district, said Superintendent of Police R. Gangadhar Rao.
Recently, officials sent proposals to the government for merging of Vijayawada International Airport in NTR District from Krishna district due to security reasons. “Security at the airport needs to be stepped up as the number of domestic and international flights landing has increased. Movement of VIPs has also increased,” Mr. Gangadhar Rao told The Hindu on Tuesday.
The SP, who welcomed President of India Droupadi Murmu at the airport, said that 400 police personnel, including Special Protection Force (SPF), Armed Reserve, OCTOPUS and the Civil police were monitoring security at Vijayawada International Airport round-the-clock.
“Besides, additional forces will be deployed at the airport during the VIP visits. The police coordinated with Intelligence Bureau (IB), Intelligence Security Wing (ISW), Protocol, Airport officials, Revenue, Fire and other departments officers for the President’s visit” Mr. Gangadhar Rao said.
Police would review security at Vijayawada International Airport regularly as the VIP movements had increased. Vigil had been increased and a mock operation was conducted at the airport recently, the SP said.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had already appealed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the CISF to take over the security of the airport.
