The Principal Senior Civil Judge Court, Bapatla, sentenced nine individuals to five years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹5,000 each in an attempted murder case filed under Ponnur Town police station. The case involved charges under Sections 148, 307, 324 IPC r/w 149 IPC, informed Guntur Superintendent of Police (SP) S. Satish Kumar in a statement on Thursday.
The incident occurred on the night of April 23, 2019, at Telagapalem near Chinna Rama Mandiram in Ponnur. A dispute over the distribution of funds collected for Sri Rama Navami celebrations escalated into violence. Armed with deadly weapons, including iron rods, hammers, and stones, the accused attacked Yeluri Ram Prasad, inflicting severe injuries to his head and body. Three others, who intervened to save Ram Prasad, were also injured.
The case, investigated by Sub-Inspector (SI) R. Swamy Srinivas, resulted in the conviction of all nine accused. Public Prosecutor M. Srikanth successfully argued the case. SP Sateesh Kumar commended the efforts of the police team and the witnesses, praising their role in securing justice. The verdict was delivered by Judge G. Vani, marking a significant step in the district’s pursuit of justice.
