Kamareddy: In protest against police harassment related to drunk driving, a youth attempted suicide within Tadwai police station limits on Thursday. The victim was identified as Keesari Gangadhar of Tadwai.
According to sources, Keesari Gangadhar, along with his relative Gangadhar from Indalwai in Nizamabad district, consumed liquor at a wine shop. While returning home, they were caught by police for a drunken drive on the Kamareddy-Yellareddy highway on Wednesday.
Police seized Gangadhar’s motorbike and transferred the accused to Tadwai police station. Keesari Gangadhar pleaded with the authorities to release his motorbike, assuring that he would pay the penalty and attend court if a case was registered. However, the police reportedly did not respond to his request. Feeling distressed, Keesari Gangadhar climbed a tree within the police station premises and threatened to jump.
Despite police urging him to come down, Gangadhar consumed another quarter bottle of liquor while on the tree and proceeded to jump.
Policemen placed a bedsheet under the tree in an attempt to cushion his fall, but unfortunately, it was unsuccessful. Keesari Gangadhar sustained serious injuries and was subsequently transferred to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.
On Thursday, it was confirmed that Gangadhar’s leg and hand were broken in the incident. He is survived by his wife and two children.
