As the Visakhapatnam Bench entered its 25th year of service, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association organised the silver jubilee celebrations in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of Law and Justice and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, lauded the services of the ITAT. The celebrations were also graced by ITAT president Justice (retired) C.V. Bhadang, vice-president (Hyderabad zone) Vijay Pal Rao, vice-president (Kolkata zone) Duvvuru R.L. Reddy, and Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax (AP & Telangana)Mitali Madhusmita.

Justice Bhadang said that the ITAT was established on January 25, 1941, serving as a quasi-judicial institution responsible for adjudicating appeals under various Direct Tax Laws. As the final fact-finding authority in matters of direct taxes, ITAT’s decisions are binding and an appeal to the High Court is permissible only when a substantial question of law arises from the Tribunal’s order.

It may be mentioned that the Visakhapatnam Bench of ITAT was established in 1997 and has jurisdiction over seven districts of Andhra Pradesh, from Srikakulam to Guntur. The Bench started functioning in 2000 at the Super Bazaar Building and moved to its current location in the LIC Building in 2007.

Several past and present Members of ITAT, along with representatives from the Income Tax Department and the Bar Association were present.
