The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore districts on Tuesday.

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the coasts of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh. Consequently, moderate rain may occur at isolated places in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

Heavy rain is forecast for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Cuddalore districts over the next two days and in Puducherry on December 25. Chennai and its suburbs can expect partly cloudy skies with the possibility of moderate rain in some areas.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture out into the sea since cyclonic storms will persist in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, the central-west Bay of Bengal, and the adjacent southwestern Bay of Bengal until December 25.

Meanwhile, speaking to News18 Tamil, private meteorologist Srikanth indicated the possibility of rain in the delta and southern districts on New Year’s Day.

Addressing concerns about rainfall in coastal districts, including Chennai, Srikanth predicted a chance of rain in the delta and northern districts on December 24 and 25.

Last week on Wednesday, rains lashed Chennai and nearby districts of Tiruvallur, and Chengelpet under the influence of a well marked low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

A weather bulletin issued by the IMD-Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai said the Low Pressure Area on December 17 over Southwest Bay of Bengal became more marked and lay as a Well Marked Low Pressure Area on Wednesday over the same region.
