Monday, December 23: Tamil Nadu seems to have enjoyed a rather successful Northeast monsoon season, with the southern state having recorded excess rainfall for the period. However, the rain gods aren’t done with the region just yet. Ongoing rains aside, a fresh batch of precipitation is expected across Tamil Nadu districts this week, and they might just put a damper on the Christmas celebrations.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the depression that was looming over the Bay of Bengal has de-intensified into a well marked low and is presently heading towards Tamil Nadu. Currently resting near the South Andhra coast, along with its associated cyclonic circulation, the system is projected to barrel closer to North Tamil Nadu by Tuesday, December 24.

Under the influence of this low, Tamil Nadu’s North coastal districts are likely to experience up to moderate rains between Tuesday and Thursday, until December 26. During this period, especially heavy downpours in the range of 64.5 mm-115.5 mm, thunderstorms and lightning are possible in isolated parts of the state on Wednesday and Thursday, December 25-26.

A yellow watch (meaning ‘be updated’) has been issued across all districts of the state, including Chennai, for the forecast period. However, heavy rains are likely to occur at isolated places over Chengalpattu, Viluppuram, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The rainfall activity coinciding with a holiday could result in traffic congestion in cities. Residents are advised to plan their outings accordingly. Towards the coasts, fisherfolk are advised against venturing into sea until the rains dissipate on Thursday.

Meanwhile, between October 1 and December 22, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal have collectively recorded 575 mm of rainfall. That leaves the region with an excess of 34%, compared to its normal of 429 mm.
