My happiness with the output now had no bounds and I shook hands with each and every member of the team.
BHPian manasr28 recently shared this with other enthusiasts:
My desire to have everything custom as per my taste was the reason I bought a 2023 Black Scorpio N Z6 Diesel Manual in spite of having ample budget to buy a Z8L.
One such desire was to have a nice audio setup in the car. Since my 2014 honda city had a decent audio setup done by Vicky when I was in Mumbai, I knew what I was looking for from that experience.
The only dilemma was that this time, I was in Bengaluru and going to Mumbai or Delhi (where I hail from) was not an option for a long time.
I paid visits to multiple renowned car accessory shops in Marathahalli and HSR layout, but nobody was inclined to meet my expectations in terms of my requirements.
Everybody wanted me to change my stock head unit with some Android head unit which I did not want to.
Then, my search led me to Evo and boy I was impressed with them since my first interaction.
Though I could not meet their owner Satya, but their team of experienced installers; Vineeth, Rupesh and team quickly understood what I wanted.
When it comes to speakers, I am a Morel Fan. So, there was no debate on the Speakers part.
We quickly zeroed on the below items for the install:
- Morel Tempo Ultra MKII 2 way 602 component speakers for the front.
- Morel Maximo 6 MKIII Coaxial Speakers for the rear.
- Morel MPD 4.100 4 Channel Amplifier to power the speakers.
- Alpine S DVC Subwoofer 12 Inches.
- Morel MPD 1.500 Monoblock Amplifier to power the Subwoofer.
- Onkyo XMD 20 10 Channel DSP since I did not want to change my Stock Head unit.
- Dr Artex Dual Layer Damping for the 4 doors and the Boot Door.
- Ofcourse, other supporting components like OFC wiring, water guards, Distribution block and Heat Shrinks sleeves were part of the install.
An appointment was given and I dropped the car to their place early in the morning and they promptly started the work.
The two amps were placed below the driver and the shotgun seat. The DSP was placed below the right middle row seat since they anyways do not fold (only the left middle row seat of Scorpio N folds and tumbles to allow access to the third row). The amps and DSPs were secured tightly by velcro tape and wiring was secured by heat-shrink sleeves in the most professional manner possible.
The installation of Amps, DSP and speakers was the most easy part. The real challenge came at the time of installing the Subwoofer.
The stock place for the rear Subwoofer provided by Mahindra is very shallow. There is not much space for the free travel of the Subwoofer’s Spider. This results in very less bass compared to what the same Subwoofer will provide when installed in a wooden enclosure box.
To increase the shallow space, we first tried installing a wooden frame doing something like below which I guess every other Audio installer is doing in a Scorpio N. However, I was not at all impressed with the audio output of the Subwoofer with this setup. The Morels were doing a great job but the Subwoofer lacked the bass I was looking for.
Only this picture is for representative purposes taken from youtube. It’s not from my car. Rest, all the pictures are from my car.
The team then advised me to go for a removable wooden box for a more enhanced bass. They even did a temporary setup for the same and I could hear huge improvement in the bass.
However, this was a no go for me as I did not want to compromise at all with the boot space and I prefer my third row seats to be raised always which the removable wooden box would not allow.
Sensing my disappointment with how things were shaping, the Evo team sprung into action and used all their expertise and experience to create a custom enclosure.
First, they created a base of different damping materials and glued it in a neat and clean manner in every corner of the entire stock subwoofer panel, wherever possible to minimize any vibrations and noise.
Second, they fabricated a wooden enclosure inside the subwoofer Panel.
Then, they took measurements and created a custom enclosure box made out of fibre. This box was again stuffed with the required amount of damping sheets.
Then, on this box, finally the sub was placed.
The interior plastic panels were cut with umpteen professionalism.
Then, a custom grill was installed on top of it to safeguard the subwoofer.
The under arm support for the third row passengers were also altered in a neat manner and the final result was like below giving it an overall OEM like finish:
Then, the tuning was done on the entire system and I was called for the demo.
Boy !!!, I was blown by the bass that the Sub was now producing. It was way more than what it was producing with the wooden box.
My happiness with the output now had no bounds and I shook hands with each and every member of the team.
The entire installation took 5 days. The team took great care of the car in this duration. They kept updating the progress via photographs on WhatsApp.
I Have been using the setup for a month now, including a road trip to Kerala and back and have no complaints whatsoever.
The only downside is that since Mahindra throws warning chimes through the same speakers, they are quite loud now. The seat belt reminders, reverse parking sensor and Android auto notifications chimes are a little louder, but something which I can happily live with.
This is a reel of my car uploaded on their Instragram Channel.
