Vijayawada: A ganja plant was found growing on the premises of the Anna Canteen located near the R&B office in Macherla town on Monday, creating a sensation. Locals who noticed the plant reported it to the police.
Police inspected the site and seized the plant. Initial investigations suggest that ganja users might have smoked and discarded seeds in the area, which sprouted into a plant. The Anna Canteen, which was initially closed after the YSRCP came to power in 2019, reopened three months ago following the formation of the NDA govt in the state. As part of the beautification efforts, plants were cultivated at the canteen premises, which initially made people mistake the marijuana plant for a marigold plant due to its similar leaf structure.
However, a mild intoxicating smell from the plant raised suspicions. Closer inspection confirmed it to be a marijuana plant and the organisers immediately informed the police, who shifted the plant to the police station.
Police are now investigating whether someone intentionally planted it or if it grew accidentally from seeds discarded when the canteen was previously closed.
