HC junks PIL on Telangana Thalli redesign

Hyderabad: Telangana high court questioned a public interest litigation filed before it, challenging the state govt’t decision to redesign the Telangana Thalli statue given the fact that the decision was approved by the state cabinet.
The PIL was filed by Juluri Gowrishankar, former chairman of Telangana Sahitya Academy and president of Telangana Rachayithala Sangham, who contested the govt’s plan to replace existing Telangana Thalli statues across the state.
A bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J Sreenivas Rao directed the counsel of Gowrishankar to submit a detailed affidavit regarding expenditure and other relevant information, following which the petitioner withdrew the PIL with permission to file a fresh petition with a comprehensive affidavit. The court disposed of the case as withdrawn.
Senior counsel B Mayur Reddy, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the project’s estimated cost of over Rs 150 crore would burden the state’s exchequer. TNN
