AICC general secretary and Telangana Affairs in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi said that the Congress would step up agitations for the removal of Amit Shah from the Union Cabinet.
Calling for his resignation over his alleged derogatory remarks about Bharat Ratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, she criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not removing Mr. Shah from the Cabinet. Addressing the media at Gandhi Bhavan on Monday, she accused the BJP of undermining constitutional values and promoting Manusmriti over the Indian Constitution.
“The BJP is trying to replace the Indian Constitution authored by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar with the Manusmritiwhich encourages untouchability and opposes an equal society,” she said. She described the BJP as an “anti-Dalit and anti-poor party,” vowing that the Congress would intensify its agitation if Mr. Shah is not removed from his position by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
CWC member Koppula Raju echoed her sentiments, stating, “Amit Shah’s remarks have deeply hurt the sentiments of the people who regard Ambedkar as god. Such hatred is unacceptable, and Mr. Shah must resign immediately.” He also flayed the BJP’s alleged attempts to distort history and diminish the contributions of the Congress party to the making of the Indian Constitution. “The Congress elected Ambedkar as the chairman of the drafting committee and has always upheld constitutional values,” he said. The Congress senior leader further accused the BJP of spreading falsehood about constitutional amendments introduced by former Prime Ministers Nehru and Indira Gandhi, asserting that those amendments benefited poor citizens.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president and MLC Mahesh Kumar Goud added that Shah’s comments in Parliament had exposed the BJP’s “anti-Ambedkar” stance and reiterated the Congress’s commitment to fighting for social justice.
In response to Mr. Amit Shah’s remarks, the TPCC conducted various programmes over the past week to raise awareness and condemn the BJP’s alleged disregard for Ambedkar’s legacy. “Parliament is the highest institution in a democracy, and comments that undermine its values must not be tolerated,” Mr. Goud said.
The Congress has also alleged that the BJP is using legal tactics, such as filing an attempt-to-murder case, to tarnish Rahul Gandhi’s image and distract from its controversial policies.
