President of Telangana Jagruthi, the cultural wing of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and party MLC K. Kavitha has asked the State government not to conduct the local bodies’ elections without finalising the 42% reservation to Backward Classes (BCs), as promised before the last Assembly elections.
Speaking after a meeting with representatives of about 40 BC bodies here on Friday, she sought to know how the State government was planning to provide 42% reservation to BCs without knowing the BC population. “While BC communities comprise over 50% of the population, how is the Congress planning to restrict the quota to just 42%,” she asked.
Stating that BRS would oppose conduct of the local bodies’ elections without a 42% quota being ensured to the BC communities, she suggested the government to consider holding elections only after the report of the BC Dedicated Commission was submitted to the government and the numbers of BC population were finalised.
She demanded that the Central government too take up the caste census as part of the general census. Further, she questioned the State government on the status of its pre-poll promise of ₹20,000 crore BC budgetary allocation to BC communities.
