Volkswagen has finally decided to bring the Golf GTI performance hatchback to India. This hot hatch will be imported under the government’s scheme, allowing up to 2,500 units of vehicles to be brought in without undergoing any homologation procedures. The Volkswagen Golf GTI is set to launch in India by August 2025. Being a completely imported unit, it is expected to be priced at a premium, around ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom). In India, it won’t have any direct rivals but will compete with the Mini Cooper S, priced at ₹44.90 lakh.
Engine Specifications of the Volkswagen Golf GTI
The Volkswagen Golf GTI, which received an update earlier this year in global markets, is powered by a 2.0L, 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. This motor delivers a claimed output of 265bhp and 370Nm of torque. It comes with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a front-wheel-drive (FWD) system. Volkswagen claims the Golf GTI can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds, making it faster than its predecessor. The hot hatch boasts a top speed of 250 km/h. Performance features such as an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, progressive steering, and optional adaptive suspension further enhance its driving dynamics.
Key Features of the Volkswagen Golf GTI
The updated Golf GTI is equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring updated graphics and a voice assistant with ChatGPT integration. It also includes a digital instrument cluster with GTI-specific graphics, tartan seat upholstery, a push-to-start button, Matrix LED headlamps, front and rear bumpers with large air intakes surrounded by a black finish, 18-inch ‘Richmond’ diamond-cut alloy wheels, a dual-tone full roof spoiler, a bonnet with an LED strip, an illuminated VW logo, red brake calipers, and 3D-looking LED taillamps, among other features.
Volkswagen Polo GTI in India
For context, Volkswagen had earlier introduced the Polo GTI in India back in 2016. It was well-received by buyers looking for a compact yet sporty car with strong performance and excellent handling. The Polo GTI was powered by a 1.8L turbocharged TSI petrol engine, producing 190bhp and 320Nm of torque. It was paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.
The Polo GTI could accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds and had a top speed of 200 km/h. However, the model was discontinued in 2020 due to several factors, including low sales performance, regulatory changes, and the availability of more affordable alternatives.
