HYDRAA plans to rejuvenate 12 lakes across city | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Disaster Response & Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has proposed to the state govt to take up a comprehensive plan to rejuvenate 12 lakes across Hyderabad metropolitan region as part of its road map for 2025, Agency commissioner A V Ranganath has said. In 2024, HYDRAA has resolved over 5,800 public complaints, he added.
“Twelve lakes — Osman Sagar, Himayat Sagar, Hussain Sagar, Saroornagar Lake, Durgam Cheruvu, Mir Alam Tank, Fox Sagar, Ramakrishnapuram Lake, Malkam Cheruvu, Pedda Cheruvu, Shamirpet Lake, and Ameenpur Lake, where HYDRAA carried out demolitions — are now being taken up for rejuvenation,” he stated at a press conference here on Saturday.
The authority aims to restore these water bodies by addressing issues such as encroachments, debris dumping, and unauthorised construction. “Advanced technologies like satellite imagery, drones, and geofencing will be used to monitor and protect these lakes. Collaboration with key departments, including the revenue and survey departments and GHMC will ensure the success of the initiative,” the commissioner added.
In 2024, HYDRAA had resolved over 5,800 public complaints related to variations in lake spread areas, encroachments, and the disappearance of water bodies. “These issues were addressed using cadastral records, toposheets, high-resolution satellite imagery. Illegal activities, including unauthorised landfills and constructions, were identified and mitigated,” he said. It also plans to upgrade Disaster Response Force Training Centre, Nagole, to enhance emergency preparedness.
HYDRAA plans to expand its infrastructure for weather prediction by increasing the number of automatic weather stations across the city. “A dedicated technical wing, comprising scientists, will be established to analyse weather data and issue public alerts. The creation of an exclusive HYDRAA FM channel for disseminating weather updates is also being explored,” he said.
The Hyderabad metropolitan region, which houses 35% of the state’s population within just 2% of its geographical area, is projected to account for 50% of the state’s population by 2050. “This rapid urbanisation underscores the need for sustainable urban development,” he said.
