HYDERABAD
The authorities of Sriramsagar Project (SRSP) have decided to give water for Rabi crops in Zone-I and Zone-II, the ayacut above Lower Manair Dam (LMD), in the on and off method from Wednesday, December 25, with release of water to Kakatiya Main Canal and Laxmi Main Canal simultaneously.
According to Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Circle Pochampad (SRSP) T. Srinivas Rao Gupta, the ayacut under Zone-I (D5 to D53) would be given water for 7 days and Zone-II (D54 to D94) for 8 days in a spell from December 25 to April 8. Zone-II ayacut would be given water first, followed by Zone-I.
He appealed to farmers to utilise water judiciously without leaving any scope for wastage. He asked the farmers along the canals tapping water with the help of pump sets to draw water only in the required quantity for their crops as excess drawal would deny water to farmers in the planned ayacut, particularly in the tail-end areas.
The two zones include an ayacut of about 4.43 lakh acres under Kakatiya and Laxmi canals in Nizamabad, Jagtial, Peddapalli and Karimnagar. It is estimated that nearly 64 tmc ft of water would be needed to meet the ayacut demand, including water for drinking needs (Mission Bhagiratha).
As on Tuesday, SRSP has 80.05 tmc ft of water with level at 1090.90 ft against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 1091 ft. Only 69.57 tmc ft water was available on the same day last year. About 1,530 cusecs of water was being drawn for the ayacut under Alisagar and Gutpha lift irrigation schemes and also Mission Bhagiratha needs.
The project has received inflows of about 282.32 tmc ft water this Water Year from June 1 and about 209.51 tmc ft water was released downstream as surplus and for irrigation (Kharif) and drinking needs. About 44 million units of hydel energy was also generated in the hydel station with 36 megawatt (4×9 MW) capacity at the project during the water year so far.
