Guwahati: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), in collaboration with the ministry of housing and urban affairs, has organised a unique event ‘Sanjha Mela‘ to empower urban self-help groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM).
The event aims to promote economic empowerment among urban SHGs by providing them with an opportunity to display their skills and entrepreneurial spirit. The event features a wide range of products, including handicrafts, textiles, food items and other artisanal goods.
“We are thrilled to host ‘Sanjha Mela’ which will provide market access to the SHGs enabling its members to showcase and sell their products directly to customers, eliminating intermediaries and creating opportunities for better profitability for the group members. The event further aims to promote digital transactions encouraging SHGs to adopt and utilise digital payment systems. Strengthening the SHGs remains one of our prime focuses,” said GMC mayor Mrigen Sarania.
He added the event is a testament to the civic body’s commitment to empowering women and promoting economic growth in urban areas. A total of 73 SHGs and 19 food vendors have set up their stalls at the fair.
The event that was inaugurated on Thursday by state housing and urban affairs minister Jayanta Mallabaruah will continue till Dec 30. The fair will offer cultural events to engage children and the families of SHG members, facilitating both as a platform for participation and entertainment.
The event has attracted a large number of visitors, who are eager to support the SHGs by purchasing their products. “We are grateful to the civic body for providing us this platform to sell and showcase our products. The govt has already provided us one-time financial assistance to set up our small businesses and organising this fair has given us a new boost to our work,” a SHG group member said.
