Hyderabad: Former minister T Harish Rao has demanded that the govt open red gram procurement centres across the state to ensure farmers get the minimum support price (MSP) and also a 400 bonus per quintal as promised in the Congress manifesto ahead of the assembly elections in 2023.
In an open letter to chief minister A Revanth Reddy, Harish Rao accused the Congress govt of betraying farmers by failing to fulfil its election promises. “Farmers are struggling, and the govt’s silence is unacceptable. They deserve answers and action — not empty promises,” Harish Rao stated in his letter.
Red gram farmers across Telangana cultivated the staple in over six lakh acres this year, with an estimated yield of 2.5 lakh metric tons. Despite the MSP of 7,550 per quintal, the farmers were being forced to sell their produce at 6,500 to 6,800 in the open market, suffering losses of up to 800 per quintal.
“This is not just negligence. It’s a betrayal. Congress made grand promises in its Warangal Farmers’ Declaration, including a 400 bonus per quintal over the MSP. Where is that bonus now? Why hasn’t your govt set up procurement centres to ensure the farmers get a fair price for their hard work?” Harish Rao questioned.
