‘Depressed’ Vizag engineer spends 3 months on Mumbai streets

Mumbai: It will be a happy new year for the family of Thagarampudi Yashwanth, a 31-year-old who had gone missing from their Visakhapatnam home three months ago. The mechanical engineer, who the family said is ‘battling depression’ was recently found in Mumbai and reunited with his folks.
The youngster was found wandering on a street near Sahar airport on Dec 19, his appearance “unkempt, untidy”, the police said. The beard was overgrown, his clothes were soiled, and he appeared somewhat disturbed, they pointed out.
Private security guards of ‘Secure 1′ posted at the airport and Central Industrial Security Force personnel spotted him after he tried to enter the airport premises. During a conversation with the intruder, he gave them his father’s phone number which helped them contact the family. A missing person‘s report had been filed in their home city three months ago.
The father, Thagarampudi Siva Prasad, told Secure 1 personnel that his son, who is facing depression, left home three months back. The youngster later revealed that he initially travelled to Goa, arriving in Mumbai eventually. “But he is unable to specify how he got to these places,” said Secure 1 chief security officer Arun Mane.
The youngster said that while in Mumbai he was robbed of his belongings — money, passport, clothes. He slept on the streets and at railway stations. On Dec 19, he tried to sneak into the airport, through the departure gate.
Assistant officer of Secure 1, Sagar Rahidune, who was posted there stopped the man in unkempt clothes.
“He muttered something about wanting to go home to Visakhapatnam. That is when we took him aside and engaged him in conversation.” said the security personnel. Officials of Sahar police station were informed about the man missing from Vizag being found in the city.
Once the family was contacted, the father immediately sent money to help the lost man. The uniformed officials helped him tidy himself, arranged for food, a change of clothes and an air ticket to reach home.
On Friday, airport security personnel said they were overjoyed to receive a photo of the man now reunited with his home folks. The engineer’s father told TOI on phone that his son is undergoing medical treatment. “…We are happy to have him back,” he said, choking.
