Vijayawada: In a significant move to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities, the Vijayawada traffic police announced ‘no helmet – no entry’ rule for all motorists on the Prakasam Barrage on Monday.
Two-wheeler riders without helmets intending to go towards Guntur were denied access to the barrage.
According to NTR district traffic deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Krishna Murthy Nayudu, this decision comes in the wake of increasing road accidents and a recent directive from the Andhra Pradesh high court, which criticised the laxity in enforcing helmet rules in the state.
The court emphasised the need for stricter measures to ensure public safety and reduce the alarming number of fatalities involving two-wheeler riders.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all citizens,” the DCP stated. “The Prakasam Barrage is a popular spot, and it is crucial that we enforce traffic rules effectively to prevent accidents. This ‘no helmet – no entry’ rule is a step in that direction,” he added.
Traffic police have implemented such initiatives on important roads like BRTS road, Mahanadu, towards Varadhi flyover, Ajith Singh Nagar, among others.
Traffic police were seen stationed near Krishnaveni Ghat at the Prakasam Barrage to strictly enforce the rule.
Police are also conducting several awareness campaigns to educate public about the importance of wearing helmets and the risk of riding without them.
The DCP urged all motorists to cooperate with the regulations and prioritise their safety by always wearing helmets while riding.
